Acronis True Image 8.0 review Editors Choice Award

Saturday 30 April 2005, 6:50 PM

Brilliant features but don't touch it if you value your data

After a few years of using Norton Ghost 2003 without a hitch, I got a new computer with a SATA HD and USB DVD RW.

My trusty set of ghost 8.0/2003 diskettes (basic, enterprise, usb, etc...) worked fine after a bit of tweaking) until it started to write the image to the DVD+RW, when it froze.

So looking around for a solution, I discovered Acronis TrueImage and found that after booting from the CD it recognised everything without any tweaking!
I was delighted so immediately made an image of my HD in case i needed later ...

... Later when i wanted to do a restore: True Image reported that every one of the 5 CDs it had created a few days earlier were corrupt and it couldn't proceed; i.e. i'd lost everything i'd backed up.

I wasn't that annoyed because, fortunately, i was only testing it out as a replacement for ghost and already had a backup of everything i needed.

Conclusion: If Norton Ghost works for you - use it! Otherwise, you're out of luck. Hopefully there will be a product soon with the reliability of Norton Ghost with the features of Acronis True Image.
