Spy Sweeper 5 review

Monday 25 September 2006, 3:06 PM

It's a pc heart attack!

All I can say is look at the forums for Spy Sweeper 5 I beg you to look and look again, see the crying and the wailing and the flailing of keyboards. Ram usage is excessive to the point a 2Gb system with an AMD X2 4800 running xp pro was so slow a commodor 64 would have been faster! and as for CPU usage....well dont expect to use the built in xp calculator it would send it over the top, it's a shame they runined this program by bad coding and over ambition, it conflicts with almost all known antivirus it seems, and webroot never repy to your ticket, Spy Sweeper 5 is so bloated it needs more than a diet, it needs to be put out of it's misery and ours, I'm just glad it was on my wifes pc, this is an example of wait to see before you take the plunge which is more and more important as incompatibilities with software that are meant to protect us become more prevalent and leave your pc dead as a DODO so hence very safe as you can't actually use them! I think its reached the point where software and hardware diversity will always bring conflicts as there are to many variables in the windows world. This I fear will be it's eventual downfall you cannot code for every variation of machine and software a user may have on their pc to allow for stability, and the pressure to make money means the next version is released before the bugs in the old one were rectified. Guess its time to digg in!

Verdict

Spy Sweeper 5 is a good choice for protecting your PC against spyware and shielding it against future infections, but it's too noisy, with its constant reminders that it's working.

On the contrary, if vendors were forced to stand behind their products it should increase innovation. It would force more, and better , testing before hitting the sales floor, resulting in fewer updates and less downtime for the consumer. At present the EULA removes responsibility from the vendor, and moves it to the user, which is a step backward. Make the vendor responsibility for their code.
