Norton AntiVirus 2004 review

Monday 22 March 2004, 4:28 PM

Couldn't install - no tech support to speak of

Tried to install on new PC. Error messages said to uninstall and reinstall. Did so. Still errors. Went to recommended Web pages and printed instructions. Followed every step -- installed but gave error messages when using. Wouldn't run "Integrator". Sent email to supprt. Received response in seven (not 4 - 5) days, referring me to the same Web pages. Uninstalled once more and reinstalled exactly as they said. No luck.

I found an error on the Web page where it said to check Windows Registry key for script blocking. The webpage tells you to type a command line that is different from what's there (a space is omitted) but Windows wouldn't let me make the change. Turns out the tech rep replied that's a typo on their Web page. That's pretty bad!

Worked for about 8 hours over 3 days to try install. Am returning product to them for refund. What a disapointment! I've used NAV 2003 on my "old" computer with no problems at all.

Verdict

NAV 2004 is still a good choice for first timers, but its minor improvements mean that NAV 2003 users need not upgrade.

Featured Talkback

Why do so many (virtually all) software packages think that they are so important that they have to be started automatically every time the computer boots? What is the largest number of "speed access", "update check", "camera download" and whatever other background programs you have ever seen running? Of those, how many did you really need?
