What happened Symantec?
I am now looking for alternatives to NAV and NIS...I unfortunately bought the latest versions of both -- multiple copies too -- and am cursing it utterly.
Both products are complete crap compared to the previous versions. THey're resource hogs, they interfere with normal operation in ways they shouldn't and they are making my home network almost unusable.
1. Both NIS and NAV get in the way of sending/receiving emails. You can turn off NAV's scan of outgoing email, but NIS controls the communication with your mail server. Yesterday I couldn't send any email because I kept getting messages that (my ISP) couldn't start up its anti-virus software. Turned out the messages were coming from NIS and it was trying to convince my ISP to run virus scanning on my emails. But because my ISP was ignoring it, would fail the message. I had to turn NIS off to get past the problem.
2. If the modem hangs up in the middle of sending an email, NIS simply sticks it in the Sent Items folder and says "sorry, you will have to try again at a later time", rather than leaving it in the Outbox. Because I have my replies are stored in the same folder as the original, I have to go digging around to find the message I tried to send.
3. If the modem hangs up in the middle of receiving an email, I can lose it forever...it appears that NIS downloads it from the mail server, the mail server then deletes it, then NIS or NAV (not sure which) fails somehow and that's it.
3b. Similar problem has happened three times now when NAV has simply hung trying to scan the email.
4. NAV adds an Office add=in that scans as you go -- a COMPLETE waste of resources and time and Microsoft have told me to disable it as it interferes with other Office add-ins.
5. NIS blocks certain things but doesn't give you the option to exclude them. It has this long list of settings you can turn on and off, but there has been at least two things I have tried to exclude that I can't find.
