Norton AntiVirus 2004 review

Wednesday 17 March 2004, 9:35 AM

Installed on various systems, no problems

I don't know what is causing the problems with the other commentors. I have been using NAV since 1994.

I now live in Germany and have had no problems so far installing NAV 2004 (German) on any of my or my customers' machines:

Athlon XP, Windows XP Home (UK);
Athlon XP, Windows XP Home (German);
Athlon XP, Windows XP Pro (German);
Pentium III, Windows 2k (German)
Pentium III, Windows 2k (UK)

In daily use, I haven't experienced any slow-down in my surfing or email. I have NIS installed and the SPAM filter seems to pick up 98% of SPAM as well (only 1 false positive so far, since October).

All-in-all, I haven't experienced any problems so far. The auto-update works fine and every time I read a news story on a new virus, I manually check I have the latest versions of the database files.

For the 10-15 machines I regularly maintain, I have experienced no installation problems, no noticeable degradation in performance and no update problems.

Unfortunately I can't comment on its ability to detect viruses, I have been running Norton since 1994 and in those 10 years, I have failed to recieve a single virus (email or otherwise). I also can't comment on their support as in 10 years I have never had need to phone them.

The only problem I have experienced is a common one, I live in Germany now, but have a couple of machines still running UK Windows and supporting software, I can't buy UK versions locally and the manfacturers and suppliers refuse to supply/let me download UK English versions of my software. I have to pick up UK upgrades when I return to the UK to visit friends and family... I am slowly upgrading the machines to German...

Is this a UK localisation issue?

Verdict

NAV 2004 is still a good choice for first timers, but its minor improvements mean that NAV 2003 users need not upgrade.

£ 44
