Slows browsing to a crawl

I've used NAV for years. The horror stories I've heard with Norton Utilities have made their way into NAV 2004 Pro. Live Update wouldn't work so I had to download updates from the Symantec Web site. Browsing slowed so much that pages wouldn't load. A search of the Internet told me that it was scanning all temporary Internet files on each page load, but even excluding this directory and turning off auto-protect didn't help. I uninstalled NAV 2004 and now my browser won't work (although I can ping IP addresses).

Verdict

NAV 2004 is still a good choice for first timers, but its minor improvements mean that NAV 2003 users need not upgrade.

Why do so many (virtually all) software packages think that they are so important that they have to be started automatically every time the computer boots? What is the largest number of "speed access", "update check", "camera download" and whatever other background programs you have ever seen running? Of those, how many did you really need?
