Norton AntiVirus 2004 review

Friday 12 December 2003, 7:46 PM

Great until you hit a problem

I had NIS 2003 on my system; when I downloaded the update NIS 2004 it removed 2003 -- but then despite emails to the contrary it would not activate, leaving me with no protection. Having unistalled and reinstalled several times to no avail I bought a disc from PC World but still no joy. I tried to phone Symantec for help but the help desk is only open Mon - Fri 9 - 5. Strangely enough that is when I and many other people are at work and thus unable to obtain help with their home PCs without taking leave. Thanks a whole bunch Symantec. I am still unable to get a refund for my download despite 3 requests.

McAffee is working brilliantly...

Verdict

NAV 2004 is still a good choice for first timers, but its minor improvements mean that NAV 2003 users need not upgrade.

Why do so many (virtually all) software packages think that they are so important that they have to be started automatically every time the computer boots? What is the largest number of "speed access", "update check", "camera download" and whatever other background programs you have ever seen running? Of those, how many did you really need?
