Microsoft Office System 2003 review

Saturday 17 September 2005, 7:06 PM

Great leap backwards in usability

No new features of any value.

Rotten user interface "improvements". The task panes are obtrusive, appallingly wasteful of screen real estate, and cannot be disabled (why no compatibility mode with dialog boxes?). This interface was designed for beginners, who wish to remain at that level of expertise.

Inconsistent weirdness. Word 2003 manages to completely break the print system when attempting to print to a net printer on our Linux box. Other applications, including PowerPoint 2003, can print to it fine (until Word 2003 does its tricks). Office 2000 applications on our other PC can still use the printer, of course.
