Microsoft has scheduled a radical 2007 makeover for its ubiquitous productivity suite, Office. The impending release, delayed from this autumn to next year, will further distinguish the company's productivity tools from those of the competition – chiefly OpenOffice.org 2.0, Star Office 8 and Corel's WordPerfect Office X3.

Office 2007 will reveal a dynamic new interface and smaller, XML-based file formats. We've installed the private, beta test version of Office 2007 and have been examining the features.

What will the next editions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook have in store for you? To check on the suite's progress, see our slide show of Microsoft Office 2007 beta 1, as well as pictures of the earlier build, Office 12 beta, from last autumn.
