Windows Mobile 6: Not a big leap but improvements where needed

Windows Mobile 6 isn't a huge leap over it's predecessor but that's not a surprise as I believe the development of it was cut short prematurely. It is pure speculation but I believe Microsoft cut short development on WM6 to work on a new OS that will be a complete revamp rather than a simple enhancement. This new OS will potentially be the iPhone killer (although I believe even WM5 had better features than iPhone).

WM6 improves on key areas such as email search but what most users will appreciate more is the increased stability and improved resource usage. You'll find you'll spend more time enjoying your Pocket PC than restarting it for a change.

Enhancements that some feel are missing such as Multimedia and easy close functions have been addressed by 3rd party software for a long time so I can't say I'm missing them. SPB's Pocket Plus enhancements allow for easy closing of apps with a single press for closing, a press and hold for options to close any other open apps or press and drag for minimise. The Core Pocket Media Player allows playback of nearly all media file types (mpg, avi, wmv, divx, xvid etc.) with excellent tools such as playlist, rendering modes, aspect ration control, etc.

There are host of other freebies you can get to check here for some of the best.

Also a problem in the past was getting voip calls to work correctly. I could could connect my call with Skype and hear the person at the other end but they couldn't hear me. I am yet to see if this works on WM6 but it was suggested that VOIP should be a lot easier for developers to implement now so finger's crossed.

Overall a good upgrade. Won't blow you away with new features but the added stability and minor tweaks are worth upgrading for.

My Rating is based on the product overall rather than in comparison to WM5.

Verdict

There are no earth-shattering new features and the interface remains less than perfect, but Windows Mobile 6 brings enough noteworthy improvements to make mobile devices easier to use and equip mobile professionals with more robust productivity tools.
