Solid, user friendly Linux
Of all the Linux'es I've tried, Suse was the easiest to install. Neither the OS itself or any applications has crashed even once since I installed it three months ago.
The main difference between Windows and Suse is that the user can change most all aspects of the software, thereby letting you use the same licence (which isn't a licence, but a fee for support and heavy documentation) for any type setup. In fact, you can make Suse similar to all Windows types (3.1 - Media Center) without purchasing anything.
If you have an older machine ready to toss out the door because Windows isn't up to it, is slow, or otherwise just doesn't support it, Linux in one way or the other is the bast path because of the huge user community and the user ability to contribute valid changes. This means you're not confined to hope when something is really stuck.
Don't think Linux goes for old computers only though -- it really shines on a modern one now that the user interfaces have more graphical power.
I recommend Suse 8.1 and 9.0 highly, even for people relatively new to computers.
