Verdict

Early releases of the Xen hypervisor showed promise but had lots of rough edges. Citrix's XenServer 5, however, is very much a production-class virtualisation solution with features that match, and in some cases exceed, what's available on rival platforms... Read Full Review.

  • Offloading of common storage processing tasks
  • Automated provisioning and resource balancing
  • Live migration and other high availability options
  • Bundled management console and P2V converter

Cons

  • XenCenter console is complicated in places
  • Advanced high availability and dynamic provisioning features are absent from the Standard Edition

So - if people can see the benefits from using virtualisation tools and approaches for consolidation (yes - I think that really is all we are talking about here!), does anyone think we are ready to finally wake up to the fact that we do not actually need to have a physical desktop at every desk? ... or, heaven forbid, that we can access our logical desktops remotely from practically anywhere?
