Pinnacle Studio 9 review Editors Choice Award

Tuesday 18 May 2004, 8:59 PM

Do not buy this crippled, unusable product

Product is crippleware -- MPEG-2 support (ability to make a DVD) absent until you 'Activate'. EULA gives Pinnacle the right to 'Upgrade' and disable Software behind your back. Advertised 100+ transitions is a lie. Most are unusable unless you upgrade.

Would hang when rendering until I increased memory to 1 Gig RAM. Then, it crashed instead. When I finally got it to render, I found the following:

The menu was entirely black except for button outlines. The audio was choppy and broken throughout. Fully 40 minutes of the 55 minute video was rendered 100% black-- no video at all.

I bought Ulead VideoStudio 8, and it rendered the same video perfectly, the first time, with no problems. It also needs less memory (512M RAM should be fine, and ALL of the transitions actually work.

If you buy Pinnacle Studio 9, you are throwing your money out the window.

Verdict

A lot of thought has gone into making the latest version of Studio as attractive as possible to newcomers and existing users alike. Don’t expect miracles from the new toolset and you’ll be more than happy with it.
