Photoshop is still king, but not for long
I think Fireworks has matured a lot, and that with the few exceptions of a couple of missing tools (render>lighting effects; color channels) it stands up firmly against Photoshop. Each "bitmap" has its own set of adjustable effects, which can be turned on and off as wel as being re-adjusted. the textures/patterns has always been a big draw (for me) with FW. Also, the tabbed images is extremely efficient and convenient for working with multiple files at once. Fireworks is a capable and competent image editing application as well as a stand-out web graphics design tool.
