SuSE Linux 9.1 Professional review

Tuesday 18 May 2004, 8:11 PM

Too complicated for custom installs

Fine if you want to do an "out of the box" install where you choose one of the designated sets. If you want to do a custom install forget it. The last decent SuSE release in this respect was 7.3. As for low spec machines, don't even think about it. I tried releases 7.3 up on a ThinkPad and it "barfed" each time. It's a pity as YAST is a great tool which works from the command line. Great if you want to use SuSE on a server (who needs a GUI gobbling up processor power on what is in most cases a headless box).

In association with Intel
Its the applications and device drivers that run on windows that cement its dominance. How many people would fork out hundreds of pounds for Vista if Linux ran all the software and kit they wanted to use.
