Very Good

HP LaserJet 2200dtn

Hewlett-Packard's LaserJet 2200dtn is the most capable model in the new 2200 range, featuring expanded paper trays, more memory and network connectivity as standard. It provides small workgroups with high-capacity mono printing capabilities, including duplexing.

This 1,200dpi, 18ppm mono laser doesn't try to break any new technological ground, but provides simple functionality with a minimum of fuss.

You aren't likely to run out of paper quickly with this printer: fully loaded, it takes 850 sheets, including the 100-sheet multipurpose tray. The two other paper trays take 250 and 500 sheets should you need the extra capacity. With the built-in duplexing unit, there's also no excuse not to use both sides of the paper.

The LaserJet 2200dtn is supplied with 16MB of RAM as standard, compared to the 8MB supplied with other models in the range. This still leaves one of the printer's DIMM slots free for further expansion up to 72MB.

You get the minimum amount of information on the front panel, which comprises just three LEDs. To help you cope with this, a Control Panel Simulator is installed along with the drivers. Clicking on this until the on-screen LEDs match those on the printer allows you to read the corresponding error message and solve the problem.

The parallel, USB and network connections are hidden behind a clip-on panel on the side, protecting the connectors from accidents. No data cables are supplied with the printer, although you may not necessarily need one as the fast infra-red (FIR) port at the front of the printer allows you to point notebooks or handhelds at it, and -- providing you have the correct software on the device -- print wirelessly.

Drivers are supplied with the LaserJet 2200dtn for almost every version of Windows, as well as for Mac OS 7.5.5 and above. During installation, you can choose to check HP's Web site for updated drivers, providing you have an Internet connection.

Like all HP network printers, the LaserJet 2200dtn is managed from a Web browser using the built-in Web JetAdmin software. This allows you to monitor the status of the printer, and perform any required management duties.

This is a good printer for small workgroups that require straightforward network printing. It's also flexible enough to be used as a locally attached printer, or even for handheld printing via infrared.
