Toshiba Libretto U100 review

If it's anything like my model 100CT it will be brilliant

I am only speaking from the experience of my Toshiba 100CT, which I have found to be excellent value. Yes it is small, the screen is difficult to see, but for portability it is unsurpassed in size except for the OQO and Sony Vaio U series.

It is well made and quite robust, I've upgraded it to a 20 Meg HDD. This new unit is very likely to be used by someone wanting a discrete unit that the usual thieves will not be able to see as it should be able to be easily carried with the user rather than hidden under the seat of a car, which is why tens of thousands of normal laptops are stolen from the back seat of a car as they are simply too large to hide, as well as being a short cut to a hernia!

Verdict

Toshiba's tiny 1kg Libretto U100 (1.4kg with the docking base) may be just too small for many people to use effectively, but it's a triumph of design and engineering. The only hefty thing about it is the price tag.

Typical price

£ 1249

Featured Talkback

Put simply, what is the compelling reason to pay ~$200 extra for an Eee with Windows XP? A Windows Eee won't come with any useful applications and you'll have to buy anti-virus software to boot. The truth about low cost computing is that nobody really cares whether the machine is running Windows or Linux as long as its cheap, its easy to use and it works.
