HP Compaq Tablet PC TC1100 review

Thursday 27 January 2005, 8:15 PM

A fantastic and extremely effective working tool

In a nutshell, it's an awesome product, but there are 3 key things which need to be improved:

1) CD/DVD drive is necessary
2) Longer battery life
3) Reduction in weight

On the whole, it's a great product and can do everything a notebook can do plus more. I spend virtually 100% of my time using just the tablet without the keyboard. It replaces a paper notebook and I run all the same applications I have on my desktop PC.

HOWEVER, its one downfall, which is huge, is the lack of a CD/DVD drive. Although a USB multi-bay unit is available, I don't particularly want to lug it around with me everywhere I go, and for the amount that we're being charged, I think it's poor that there is no CD- or DVD-RW capability, and if that came as standard as part of the product, I would rate this as almost perfect -- the only other thing is battery life. If you travel a lot, as I do, and want to watch a DVD from the tablet, you're limited at the moment.

Put simply, what is the compelling reason to pay ~$200 extra for an Eee with Windows XP? A Windows Eee won't come with any useful applications and you'll have to buy anti-virus software to boot. The truth about low cost computing is that nobody really cares whether the machine is running Windows or Linux as long as its cheap, its easy to use and it works.
