Dell Inspiron 8600 review Editors Choice Award

Friday 20 August 2004, 11:22 AM

Good but not good enough!

This is my very first laptop and the deal was fantastic. Got a Centrino P-M 1.6GHz, 1MB L2 Cache, 128MB ATi Mobility 9600 Pro Turbo, 512MB DDR-RAM, 60GB 4200rpm HDD, modular DVD-ROM/CD-R/RW drive, 15.4" WSXGA Screen. year 2 to 3 collect and return to base warranty.

When first received a v.good impression but after just 2 days, it refused to power up on occasions, so got Dell to come pick it up and when it came back, it was repaired. Phew~! (Lesson: Never buy Dell laptops unless you are prepared to get additional warranty coverage. They have the reputation to suddenly fail.)

After approx 2 months since I've got this system, I felt one side of the keyboard is making a different tone when typing. In particular, the right side feels more 'solid' compared to the left side. However, if you are prepared to open up your laptop to do some minor modifications, it is easily resolved with tutorials on the web.

Pros: Media Buttons, Volume control a nice touch, excellent screen (from Samsung), decent speakers for their size, overall fast notebook.
Cons: Casing made out of plastic, screen makes a bit of noise when opening/closing but no biggie... ^^. No legacy ports (serial, parallel, SPDIF)

My overall rating: 9.0/10
My rating if Dell 8600 came with all the legacy ports and if it didn't break down on me: 10.0/10.0
