Dell Inspiron 8600 review Editors Choice Award

Friday 10 October 2003, 5:04 AM

Great graphics machine

I use the machine for Scientific Visualization Software Development on Linux and MS Windows -- am not a gamer or DVD watcher, although there is some overlap in feature requirements.

Bad
1. Needs more Linux Support from DELL and Nvidia. The Broadcom driver works for the NIC for Linux from the Broadcom site. The Nvidia drivers are in need of work and should be a priority.
If you are thinking of running Linux, DON'T get the ATI card, since ATI doesn't support them on LINUX.

2. Needs a ps2 port on the machine. (useful for ps/2 KVM switches)

3. The port replicator option doesn't include a docking station with SCSI and IDE options which are available on the Precision workstation and the Latitude notebooks.

Good:

1. Tou can run the floppy externally while using the dvd drive via a usb connector. You can't run the dvd this way though. (useful for creating floppy boot disks as part of a installation from a cd)

2. Where else can you run TWO screens at 1900x1600 as one virtual screen at 32 bits (on XP) from a laptop? AWESOME!

3. Get the 7200 rpm 60 GB drive. It's just now been put on the web: it's very nice.

4. I don't think there is a nicer laptop available, with the M60 a close second (more money/weight/heat, less battery life). Other 'big screen' laptops from HP/ Toshiba/SONY have less resolution on screen. Alienware and 'gaming machines' ignore linux entirely and are not suitable dual boot machines.
