Sony VAIO PCG-TR1MP review Editors Choice Award

Tuesday 20 January 2004, 12:52 AM

The screen is excellent

I bought the machine 4 months ago. I have a problem with a loose battery, it shakes around in its bay, despite it being locked in properly -- a small niggle, but not what I expected at this price. I still have to send it to Sony for repair, not sure what they can do though --either the battery is the wrong size or the laptop is.

I would agree with earlier posts, that it needs more RAM -- I find DVD and MPEG playback slightly choppy, which is noticeable through a projector. I had heard about the camera problems, and mine has now stopped working. Sony says you can do a reset to resolve the situation that involves sticking a paper clip in a hole in the base with the added risk of pushing to hard and doing serious damage to the board.

It looks superb everyone that sees it wants one! Another positive is the weight and size: you can stick the thing in any bag and nobody would notice that you are carrying a laptop, which from a security point of view, is a good thing. As a mobile presenter, I have found it to do most things well. The PC Card slot doesn’t seem to work with an adapter and my 128MB CompactFlash card -- not sure why as yet.

I wouldn’t want to be without it though, which is why it’s taken me so long to send it back (they say it will take a week or so!). Not so good when you think about how much it costs -- at the price they should send someone out to fix the machine. The screen is the best feature, a pleasure to look at.

Verdict

The VAIO TR1MP is a touch too diminutive to serve as your primary computer, but it's an excellent supplementary system for frequent travellers.
