Sony VAIO PCG-TR1MP review Editors Choice Award

Thursday 30 October 2003, 7:59 PM

Terrible after-sales support...

I, like many others, suffered from the camera breaking. It went for repair and came back with a new motherboard (!), but a curious new problem where noise came through the speakers whenever data was going through the PCMCIA slot. Went away again for repair -- this time 3 (yes, that's three) new motherboards were fitted and a one-month wait for a replacement PCMCIA interface. It came back from that repair and I was unable to install any 802.11a wireless cards which I use at home.

I have hit a brick wall with their support as they "don't have the authority" to take it further, no matter how hard I shout at them and Customer Relations have managed to completely ignore a letter I sent several weeks ago.

I purchased the laptop in July, I had it for one month. Now it's nearly November, it has been in Sony's care until now, and is still not fixed.

Do not buy if you want reliability! Sure, the features are great and it's a lovely looking little machine... but don't let that fool you.

Verdict

The VAIO TR1MP is a touch too diminutive to serve as your primary computer, but it's an excellent supplementary system for frequent travellers.
