Acer TravelMate 800 review Editors Choice Award

Sunday 19 March 2006, 8:42 PM

Poor Quality, unreliable laptop, appalling service

NEVER BUY AN ACER
I bought a Travelmate in Feb 2005. In 1 week it failed completely. Rescued with full recovery. After 1 month Audio started making high noise during start up. After 8 months the power socket broke. Acer Esplex refused to repair under warranty, even though there is a lot of evidence on the Internet of problems with the connector and the motherboard. After another 5 months Insight persuaded Esplex to replace the motherboard but Esplex made us pay for labour. (Insight paid 50% of the costs in support of my claim for repair.) Only 3 days after repair the system crashed again with the same symptoms as week 1. Esplex now want another £130 to repair the failed HDD; a unit that has not yet achieved more than 8 months operation.

Esplex always try to get payment for warranty repairs. Getting through to their call centre can take days and their e-mail responses are either NEVER or at best longer than 1 week.

The product quality and relaibility is much worse than my experience with Toshiba, Fujitsu and Dell. Go for these and not Acer.
