But don't buy this machine. Get it as a gift. :)


A business friend gave me this Inspiron 5100 six months ago. It runs pretty well but you need to clean the dust out of it regularly (every two weeks). Get the compressed air in a can. I had overheating and shutdown problems too. My solution was to place it on a hard clean surface, raised up about an inch (2 cm) on top of two aluminum bars with rubber band jackets for traction. This works. It needs airflow.

As for getting the video card updates, Microsoft has them at the Windows Update website. They are free.

Do not ever get water on the touchpad for the built-in mouse. Use iso-propyl alcohol and a soft cloth to clean it. You can clean the screen the same way. Eye-glasses cleaner works too.

If it's running hot, run another deskfan so air flows across the box. That helps. Air conditioning is also good.

It's a good machine if you take care of it properly.
