Sony VAIO PCG-NV109M review

Sunday 31 July 2005, 8:47 PM

1st problem in over 4 years: HD broken

Great laptop. I bought mine for £1,200 off eBay in 2001 (naive -- wouldn't use eBay again for such a big purchase).

Subwoofer still going strong, MD bay obsolete due to iPod.

Never had a problem that couldnt be solved by Club VAIO (excellent website -- particularly a guy named Kee-lo, the guy is a legend)

However, HD just bought it (boy it did some overtime though: endless movie/music/jazz ;) downloads at uni etc) Be nice to upgrade to 80GB though.

Just bought USB 2 adaptor (£7 - ebay again) using wireless on broadband, so as you can see it's still strong!

Put simply, what is the compelling reason to pay ~$200 extra for an Eee with Windows XP? A Windows Eee won't come with any useful applications and you'll have to buy anti-virus software to boot. The truth about low cost computing is that nobody really cares whether the machine is running Windows or Linux as long as its cheap, its easy to use and it works.
