IBM ThinkPad X22 review

Thursday 18 December 2003, 10:18 PM

Most reliable laptop I know

I bought my X22 off eBay used for about 700 dollars and it still had a year of warranty. its AC adapter died on me and when I called IBM, they didn't hesitate to send me a new adapter. All I had to do was send the broken one back at absolutely no cost to me.

IBM support is unmatched, unlike Dell where you may have to go through 3 or 5 Indian operators with heavy accents that you can hardly make out. IBM's operators that I dealt with are highly knowledgable and they sound like they're in the US.

I love this X22 so much that I bought another one. when my friend's Inspiron went down, I lent her my spare and she was amazed at how light it was. I have not had a crash on my IBM ever.

The keyboard is wonderful. It has just the right feel that helps accelerate typing. The little nighlight is so helpful. I sometimes use it as a flashlight in total darkness. Believe me, it makes an illuminous differnece. IBM is ingenous.

I take my X22 on the road to watch movies during traffic jams. when I plugged the supplied AC adapter into a power converter, i hear a lot of noise through my stereo. I then had to go to eBay to order an OLDER IBM adapter, which was heavier and in my mind was more expensively made, and the problem went away. I play my music through this computer on the road and it has proven a great companion.

The CompactFlash slot is a godsend. Instead of hasseling with cables, I just pop the flash card into the X22 and upload my photos from my digicam.

The only shortcoming the x22 has is its lack of a printer port. I don't care too much for the CD-ROM built in because I never access information from a CD. I always network to download information.

Verdict

If you must have the lightest possible system, and don't mind the lower performance, IBM's ThinkPad X22 may be the ultraportable for you. Otherwise, look elsewhere.
