Sony VAIO VGN-U750P: a first look

Sony's ultraportable VAIO U series is now available in the UK in the shape of the VAIO VGN-U750P, courtesy of Expansys. Note that this is an unofficial 'grey import': Sony Europe does not currently list this product.
Sony's tablet-style VAIO VGN-U759P has a 5in. touchscreen and runs Windows XP Professional. It costs £1,499.95 (inc. VAT) from Expansys.
With a 1.1GHz Pentium M processor, 512MB of RAM, and a 20GB hard drive, the tablet-style VAIO VGN-U750P features several notebook-calibre components. But although it has a 5in. touch-screen, it runs Microsoft Windows XP Professional rather than the Tablet PC Edition you might expect. Despite its 0.54kg weight and small form factor (16.8cm by 10.9cm by 2.6in.), the VAIO VGN-U750P is too big to hold in your hand comfortably for a long time, and its lack of a built-in keyboard makes it difficult to type in a URL, let alone write email or work on a Word document. And at £1,499.95 (inc. VAT), the U750P is costly given that it's from an immature category -- the only other comparable product available over here is the OQO Model 01, which is also imported and sold (for £1,614.95 inc. VAT) by Expansys. Although the jury's still out on the 'palmtop' PC concept, the VAIO VGN-U750P looks like the most powerful example of its ilk to date.
