Netgear DG834G review Editors Choice Award

Wednesday 1 December 2004, 3:13 PM

Works, kind of, well just

I bought this from Amazon and it took two minutes to setup and configure with two Netgear wireless PCMCIA cards and my ISP (BT). I updated the firmware after session hangs and wireless dropouts and this seemed to make things worse. It now needs powercycling every day and the remote management functionality doesn't work at all. It looks nice, the software is pretty and it appears to have all the required bells and whistles -- but what good is that if it doesn't do the required job? Don't bank on support from Netgear either. We wait with bated breath for the next fireware release.

Verdict

The DG834G combines five network functions in a single box — ADSL modem, router, switch, firewall and 802.11g wireless access point. Despite some dodgy firmware updates, it’s one of the better single-box router solutions on the market.
