Linksys WRT54G Wireless-G Broadband Router review

Friday 26 March 2004, 4:46 AM

Attractive, but frustrating!

I had the WAP11 (B-mode) router which worked pretty well for a long time. It finally failed (for unknown reasons -- could be heat related?), and I decided to 'upgrade' to the WRT54G -- big mistake. I have had nothing but trouble since. It is completely useless in 'Mixed' 802.11b/g mode (I didn't want to upgrade all of my NICs to the g spec and wireless-b printers *never* work with it), and Windows XP seems to cause all sorts of inconsistent behavior (Zero Wireless Configuration Service, various Wireless OS patches etc...).

My Win98 machines and B NICs outright refuse to connect and numerous drop-offs and slow transfer speeds for g equipiment prove that not all WRT54Gs are created equal. I have given up completely on this product (and perhaps Linksys altogether).

I downloaded all of the firmware updates (I have read that might be a mistake also!), read a ton of material, tried to troubleshoot PC's and the router accounting for many spent hours with little to show for it (except for a few more spots on my liver perhaps). I have read about problems with firmware, overheating, drivers for Windows, mixed mode issues, poor quality control, sunspots and wishing upon a little star that can effect it. Stick with 802.11b or pay for a non-Linksys 802.11a router.

Verdict

The low-cost WRT54G delivers reasonably high throughput. But it has a relatively short operating range, and its poor performance with 802.11b devices sits poorly with claims of backward compatibility.
