There are other keyboard-phones, but they are not Nokia...

After having used or at least played with for a day, the "other" keyboard equipped smartphones are just not up to the E90 which is a category in itself.
Nokia has a decade experience in optimising the device, HTC, Toshiba etc. are just newcomers and you'll note it.
The E90 has the best build quality of all, a SUPERB keyboard (not those flimsy plastic keys found on the drawer keyboards), much better performance than its predecessors and the DUAL SCREEN. This is a feature I didn't care about before buying, but which turned to be the star of the show.

Additionally, the latest version of the Symbian OS is just much better optimised for these types of devices, although Win Mobile 6 allows the competitors to catch up a bit.

And then there is the big screen, 800 pixel wide, unmatched by any competitor, allowing really fast HSDPA broad band PC like web browsing. OK, the Toshiba G900 has also 800 pixel, but the screen is physically much smaller, so everything looks very cramped.

And no, the E90 is not that big and fat. It feels light, doesn't have the look of a brickphone. And the battery life is surprisingly acceptable, though not great, for such a 3.5 G monster device.

I would only hope that Nokia releases soon a new version of the contacts application (there WinMo and Blackberry are the clear winners with their better integration and faster and more global search features). That's why I lower the Features grade to a 9 ("only").

Verdict

It won’t appeal to everyone, but the E90 is a worthy successor in Nokia's Communicator line, despite the fact that there are now many keyboard-equipped mobile devices available.

Nokia E63

Review Although it's missing some features (chiefly HSDPA and GPS), Nokia's E63 is a well-thought-out, ergonomic and affordable smartphone.
