Sony Ericsson V800/Vodafone 3G review

Thursday 30 December 2004, 4:58 PM

Nice at the beginning, but crashes like Windows -- avoid

I have had this telephone for one month now -- after owning a Nokia 8210 for almost 5 years, and after getting over the fantastic specs that truly rock (camera, sync, java, mp3 player all excellent, display is just top-notch) I started having problems:

- while typing SMS, phone crashes, reboots for 5 minutes
- sometimes cannot pick up (cool! you get a portable answering machine for 600 EUR)
- sometimes does not ring at all (re-cool -> answering machine)
- OS is super-slow and menu navigation a nightmare
- keys are not proeminent which makes typing not that easy

On the whole a brilliant phone when you look at the specs, if only it could be used like a phone: to make those calls!

I will bring it back next week.

Verdict

Sony Ericsson's V800 is a well-featured and user-friendly, if rather large, 3G phone. Vodafone's 3G service isn't especially compelling, although you can use the phone as a 3G modem for a notebook computer.

£ 50

There are a number of handsets that claim to meet 'ruggedness' standards but which in fact are really only heavy duty phones - It seems the Sonim handset fits into this category - it is still a great handset for the target audience they have in mind
