Orange SPV review

Friday 26 March 2004, 12:44 PM

Good features, but unreliable for a phone

I've had an Orange SPV for almost 10 months.

Good: Ability to check email, ability to use Messenger (I've had to use 3rd party software though), diary, ability to synchronise with computer, camera.

Bad: Reliability: if you receive text when placing punctuation in a message being written, the only way to read a new message is to switch off and back on. Once a quarter -- SIM locks by itself and you need to take out the battery and put back in to use the phone. Frequently has problems finding GPRS signal when going on-line.

Overall: I like it and the features, but the reliability issues do make it annoying at times (although you do get used to them).

Verdict

Orange’s SPV is the first Microsoft Smartphone 2002-powered mobile phone to hit the UK market. You’ll need to be a technophile to get the most out of its extensive feature set, but Orange has put together a good-value package that should prove tempting.

Put simply, what is the compelling reason to pay ~$200 extra for an Eee with Windows XP? A Windows Eee won't come with any useful applications and you'll have to buy anti-virus software to boot. The truth about low cost computing is that nobody really cares whether the machine is running Windows or Linux as long as its cheap, its easy to use and it works.
