Microsoft Wireless Optical Desktop for Bluetooth review

Friday 13 February 2004, 5:40 PM

Glitch keyboard setup defeats cordless

Used this keyboard a few weeks and found it unusable. Though it did work for a few days, eventually mouse and keyboard would have a delay of ~10 sec -- i.e. you type something in and it takes 10 secs for the computer to respond. I tried a variety of troubleshooting to get keyobard working, focusing mostly on identifing and eliminating 2.4GHz interfence. No luck. The only variable beyond my control is that desktop was used in an office environemnt. It is possible the floor below (office is on top floor) had some sort of Wi-Fi or other 2.4GHz device running. The point is, my Logitech Bluetooth desktop does not have similar problems. Go buy the Logitech DiNovo! Pricey but beautiful and works and feels like a dream!

Verdict

Despite some installation glitches and evidence of keyboard driver instability, the Wireless Optical Desktop for Bluetooth is a pleasure to use. Cable clutter is reduced and mobility significantly improved. It’s well worth considering as a replacement for a conventional keyboard and mouse combination, but does not yet provide reliable interoperability with other Bluetooth devices.
