I bought one

While there are better devices out there, I got this because it was one of the first devices out with GPS and phone that had network operator support. I could have bought more powerful devices, but without a plan and its subsidy, it was more expensive. I also appreciate having a high street shop I can go to for support.

As regards its operation, I cant seem to enter the full UK postcode through the CoPilot software. This to me seems a huge failing.

The camera works reasonably well. Of course it would be nice to have more pixels, optical and digital zoom, and a flash, but within the confines of it being primarily a phone, it is sufficient.

The lack of Wifi is an issue. I almost went with the O2 XDA Orbit which does have it, but had a discount from TMobile for being a heavy plan user, which made a not insignificant price difference.

The CPU is on the slow side, particularly if you had wanted to run Skype. Its possible to overclock the CPU for the one application, but frankly this level of fiddling is something I'm just not interested in.

I was only able to add around 6 song into the device before running out of memory, which is quite a small amount. I was surprised at this.

Aside from this, it works very well, and I have no complaints.

The next time around, no doubt all devices in this space will have better hardware, and the CPU speed, and pixel count will go up, along with the storage. I suspect that software, and the ability to enter full UK postcodes will probably be a more important issue, though I could have solved that if I had chosen to pay extra and get TomTom, which would have been a better choice of software to bundle.

Verdict

T-Mobile's latest connected handheld is the first from a UK network operator with a built-in GPS receiver. The lack of Wi-Fi is a major drawback, however; we'd also like to see the wide-area connectivity upgraded from GPRS to 3G.

Put simply, what is the compelling reason to pay ~$200 extra for an Eee with Windows XP? A Windows Eee won't come with any useful applications and you'll have to buy anti-virus software to boot. The truth about low cost computing is that nobody really cares whether the machine is running Windows or Linux as long as its cheap, its easy to use and it works.
