Acer n30 review

Sunday 28 November 2004, 12:19 AM

Excellent performance from a cheaper end unit

I have purchased the n30 linked to a GPS as a complete kit and managed to do so for under £300. The n30 was to replace my aging Psion 5mx and give me the benefit of colour and contrast. The GPS performs well with good hot and warm starts and a low TTFF. I wanted a cheap "car and office" solution and I've got it.

The screen is a big bonus - quite excellent - although I do think some sort of protection is a must; big plus - the "white" is white (not grey or pale yellow like on some other makes) - important for someone like myself who has to rely on contrast. I realise it is "only" a 266MHz device, but it's nearly as fast as my colleague's 400MHz system and besides I can't operate that fast as to justify the additional outlay.

The only worry I have come across is I can't figure out how to change the battery if the unit goes "dead" - is it just chucked away or am I missing something? Also never having used CF SD MMC cards before I am a bit confused but now doubt will find out soon enough.

Verdict

Acer's n30 Pocket PC is compact and lightweight, and includes Bluetooth, but it could do with integrated Wi-Fi and a swappable battery.
