Dell Axim X3i review

Monday 26 January 2004, 12:07 AM

Wi-Fi so simple to use, screen very clear

Upgraded to the Axim X3i from an iPaq 3850, principally for the Wi-Fi connectivity. No real use for Bluetooth, so the extra cash for a HP4150 would have been wasted. On top of this I got a VERY good price on eBay - £227!

First impressions (only been using it for a few days) are excellent. Wi-Fi is simplicity itself to set up and use both at home and in the two hotspots I've visited. The Wi-Fi on/off button is a real boon, otherwise battery life could become an issue, and I like the jog-dial (never liked them on Sony VAIO laptops though). Dell has also bundled a useful application on the task bar that allows you to fully close applications instead of leaving them in memory.

Styling won't suit everyone -- it is a little blocky. But personally I like the clean simplicity of the design. I also like the sync cradle; the handheld fits far more positively into it than on my old iPaq, which was prone to losing the sync if I accidentally nudged it in the wrong direction during synchronisation.

Overall, I'm impressed, and awfully pleased with the value for money!

Verdict

It’s not at the top of the current Pocket PC heap, but Dell's X3 flagship offers some welcome improvements over last year's X5 models.

Review Although it's missing some features (chiefly HSDPA and GPS), Nokia's E63 is a well-thought-out, ergonomic and affordable smartphone.
