Palm Tungsten W review

Friday 17 September 2004, 12:50 PM

This isn't a phone

The phone feature in this PDA sucks. You have to use a hands-free kit in order to use the phone. It works well if you're going to have the handsfree in your ear at all times. Otherwise you'll have to start digging it under your shirt of wherever it may be. Or perhaps you'd like to keep the handsfree disconnected from the PDA so that you would have greater freedom when using the PDA. However in this case you would have to plug the handsfree before recieving calls. From experience I can tell you that most callers don't bother to wait the necessaru 10-30s before you are actually able to pick up the phone by pressing the small button on the mic or by pressing ansver button on the screen. In any case ansvering is very inconvenient or slow. Therefore this device doesn't qualify as a phone.

It's a great Palm though. Tons of freeware programs are available. The thumbpad is easy and quick to operate. Writing SMS or notes with this device is better than anything I've tried before. Previous Palms had a scruffy pen interface. Now we can finally say goodbye to this nasty compromise of space, convenience and money.

Currently I'm using this device as a great PDA and a Nokia 3310 as a phone. This combination works. Nokia gets the calls and SMSs while Palm does everything else.

Verdict

Palm's handheld/mobile phone combo is generally well designed, but there are a few deficiencies that prevent it from being an outright winner.

Review Although it's missing some features (chiefly HSDPA and GPS), Nokia's E63 is a well-thought-out, ergonomic and affordable smartphone.
