Fast and easy to use but maps out of date

The product is quite nicely finished and easy to use, but needs a couple of the rough edges filing down. Better topographical to 3D integration would be welcome. Bundled GPS receiver is absolutely excellent and very sensitive.

Some roads appear offset 20+ metres from their actual location which seems sloppy.

The worst part is that TomTom appear to have no procedure in place for map updates other than informing the customer via newsletter. Currently there are no updates available and with some locations being over 5 years out of date, make certain areas utterly obsolete which cripples the product in some key places. The maps really do desperately need updating and need to be continually updated -- I'd be happy to pay an annual subscription for this service but there is no such option and no indication that map updates will ever be released which is worrying.

It seems TomTom did not hit the ground running with the UK mapped version of the product and are now stumbling around; they really need to get those maps bang up to date, or I'll be switching to a Garmin.

Verdict

Despite its lack of speed, TomTom 2 is an excellent Pocket PC-based GPS navigation system. Significant enhancements in version 2 make it the current best of breed.
