TomTom Navigator 2 review

Monday 13 October 2003, 4:54 PM

Good but needs polishing

All goes well until you decide that you actually know the road where you need to go. Route recalculation is quick but will insist on going back, back, back, back over and over again. I once was advised to turn back for 20 miles, when finally it gave up and recalculated the road the way I wanted. The difference in distance in that case was 3 miles between 2 different routes and I took the shorter one. TomTom almost exclusively wants to use motorways, it just doesn't know anything about a remote chance of using anything else. Don't use it in London. It somehow always chooses the most congested road (and insists you go back there if you try your own thinking).

Verdict

Despite its lack of speed, TomTom 2 is an excellent Pocket PC-based GPS navigation system. Significant enhancements in version 2 make it the current best of breed.
