More than just gimmicky

Sony quality & style. Rather than buy this as a TV/computer for a living room, I use it as a computer with a TV in my study at which it peforms admirably and I can take refuge from screaming kids.

I take your point about no digital TV, but I use it much of the time to watch DVDs, and for that it's great. The screen is excellent & as a main PC screen it is superb. I would buy this just as a desktop for that reason. Plus, I get the advantage of all that extra space under the desk without the performance disadvantages of a laptop. The quietness of the machine is very important in this respect. I have yet to find a quieter machine.

I struggled a bit with the fixed keyboard at first, but like most things I've got used to it and now barely notice. I would even say it's improved my posture at the desk.

One small annoyance is the DVD/CD which pops out of the right hand side of the screen bezel. If you have it in a tight spot as I do (next to a printer) it's a real pain.
The online Sony support is pretty good compared to others I've experienced.

Verdict

The VAIO W1 is an elegant and generally well-specified ‘media centre’ PC. But, like many convergence devices, it makes a number of compromises that reduce its initial appeal.
