Sony VAIO PCV-W1 review

Wednesday 8 October 2003, 4:28 PM

Sony could do better

This is a let-down for someone who is a Sony consumer and to date happy with my VAIO. Not worth the upgrade though. By trying to imitate the offering provided by Microsoft's WMC, Sony should have come up with a sleeker and improved system where WMC falters. At best this is a cut-down version, almost resembling a home-made, garage-type quick build without giving it too much thought. As a result it's expensive for what it offers and personally I'd rather wait until WMC 2004 is available in the UK on any other PC manufacturer. That is unless Sony has learned the lesson and has not only taken up WMC 2004 (as they seem to be planning in the States) but has also improved on it with their usual eye for detail and small niceties. Both a wireless mouse and keyboard are an absolute must.

Verdict

The VAIO W1 is an elegant and generally well-specified ‘media centre’ PC. But, like many convergence devices, it makes a number of compromises that reduce its initial appeal.

if the OLPC winds up as a vehicle to create a dependence on Windows for millions of poor people, the net effect for humanity will be negative. What makes it good is if it leads the users to freedom through free, freedom-respecting software.
