Christmas Competition 2008

Win a Dell Inspiron Mini 9 netbook

[CLOSED]

The final prize in the '12 days of Christmas Competition' is being contributed by ZDNet UK, and is a black Dell Inspiron Mini 9 netbook, loaded with Windows XP. This is the small, low-power machine that picked up a 'Very Good' rating from ZDNet editors when they reviewed it in September.

They described the Mini 9 as an excellent example of the netbook form, with none of the failings such as older CPUs, insufficient storage or poor touch-pads that have prevented certain rival machines from making headway.

The Mini 9 has 1GB of memory and a 16GB solid-state hard drive and is powered by a 1.60GHz Intel Atom N270 processor with a 512KB cache.

Despite its small 23.2x17.2cm format, this Dell netbook succeeds in squeezing a useful keyboard into a tiny space. It does this by maximising the size of the letter keys while reducing certain keys, such as Tab and Caps Lock, to small slivers, and removing the entire function-key row. F1 to F10 are now alternate keys of the A-L row.

Flip open the Mini 9's lid and you find an 8.9-inch, 1,024x600-pixel screen, with a webcam above, and two small speaker grilles below. The display offers just enough space for displaying web pages and Word documents. Our reviewers reckoned the nine-inch size is perfect for netbooks, and better than the smaller seven-inch or larger 10-inch screens found on other systems.

With integrated Bluetooth, this slim netbook — 3.2cm tapering to 2.7cm towards the front — incorporates a standard set of connections, including three USB ports, headphone and mic jack, VGA out, an SD card slot and an Ethernet port.
