ZDNet editors gave the Yoggie Gatekeeper Card Pro an 'Excellent' rating when they tested it in August 2008. It is a hardware device designed to protect your laptop both in and out of the office, but is especially suited to mobile working.
In fact, the Gatekeeper Card Pro is a full-blown Linux-based computer with its own processor and memory, containing 13 security software applications. The Gatekeeper Card Pro slides into an ExpressCard slot on the notebook, rather than into a USB slot as Yoggie's Pico products do. The entire computer, which measures 75x34x5mm, has been designed for installation inside another computer — be it a Windows or Apple laptop — for the purpose of providing security protection.
It is designed to be a 'plug and forget' device, relieving you of the need to separately manage a range of security software subscriptions. For example, it automatically checks for updates during use. In addition, since it moves security tasks away from the host laptop and offloads them onto the device, you may see a boost in your notebook's performance. For large organisations, the Gatekeeper Card Pro can be remotely managed by an IT manager through the Yoggie Management Server console.
Gatekeeper Card Pro provides a physical barrier between the laptop and the internet; it intercepts and scans all internet traffic to ensure threats never reach the laptop. The built-in applications include a firewall, intrusion detection and prevention, web filtering, antivirus, anti-spam and anti-spyware, as well as other kinds of protection, rivalling a corporate network in its scope. Licensing for all these applications is covered in the device's £99 price.
Away from the office, the device defends against threats from internet hotspots by hiding the laptop's IP address, revealing only its own.
