If you need some help sifting through your content, then try firing up the blue box from Google. The Google Mini search appliance plugs straight into your network to search securely across intranets, file servers and enterprise applications.
The Mini is a hardware and software package that looks for documents on your local network or pages on your own website. All you have to do to get going is plug the 1U rack-mount unit into the power and your network. No special knowledge is needed, and Google has an online demo to show you how to install and configure the Mini, if you want a run-through.
Everything, from set-up to searches, is done through a browser. All you have to do is tell the Google software which kinds of URL you're looking for, then let it loose to crawl through your content and build an index. The Mini indexes up to 300,000 documents and starts from £1,295 for 50,000 documents. It can handle up to 220 different file types, including Microsoft Office documents and PDFs, as well as ordinary HTML, in a variety of languages. It also supports document-level security so that users only see the content they're authorised to view. And the Mini's new OneBox for Enterprise feature enables users to view search results from a variety of business and CRM applications in a single Google interface.
Thanks to recent updates, this version of the Mini has some useful added features to improve search on your website. It can now create a sitemap for submission to Google and other search engines, for one. Also, it can hook up with Google's Analytics service to give you a breakdown of how visitors use your site.
