Need a single place to keep hefty amounts of data for different devices? Then Netgear's ReadyNAS NV+, a network-attached storage appliance with a strapping 1TB (terabyte) of capacity, can sort you out.
When linked to your home or office set-up, the ReadyNAS can keep all your files in one place. You can serve the file you want to multiple devices at the same time — meaning you can stream one high-definition video to players all around the house, should you want that. On the incoming side, the ReadyNAS will back up the Windows, Mac OS and Linux gear on your network, both automatically and via a button on the front panel.
The ReadyNAS NV+ RND4425 up for grabs comes in an aluminium shell about eight inches tall, five inches wide and nine inches deep — compact enough for a desktop or entertainment centre. It has four drive bays filled with four 250GB drives, adding up to 1TB of storage. These drives can be swapped out and managed in three different RAID configurations: 0, 1 and 5. Netgear also includes its own X-RAID technology, which streamlines swapping in bigger drives.
The network-attached storage (NAS) appliance hooks up to networks over gigabit Ethernet. On top of that, it has three USB 2.0 ports for connecting to computers, printers, disk drives and USB storage devices, if you feel the need for more space.
Unlike traditional file servers, the ReadyNAS is straightforward to configure, getting you up and running easily. It comes with a web browser interface and a set-up wizard that does the job with a few clicks of the mouse. It also has built-in system monitoring with email alerts and an energy-saving mode to automate start-up and shutdown.
