Christmas Competition 2007

Win a Brother colour laser printer

[CLOSED]

The MFC-9440CN delivers high-quality prints at speeds of up to 20 pages per minute, whether it's handling vivid colour presentations and images, colour charts, or text documents. As a bonus, it has built-in PictBridge technology, which allows you to print directly from a camera or USB stick, cutting out the PC stage.

The £649 unit device has a scan resolution of 19,200x19,200dpi, to produce professional-standard colour and greyscale copies. What's more, it can scan to email, OCR and FTP applications, or to a file. The unit is large — 43.2cm wide, 48.7cm deep and 48.2cm tall — which means it can easily handle A4 originals. It weighs 33kg.

As for networking, connectivity is built-in. One nice security feature is the inclusion of SSL encryption to prevent others eavesdropping on unsecured data passing over the network. The unit has other useful features, including:

  • Up to 2,400x600dpi print resolution
  • A 250-sheet paper tray, plus a 50-sheet multipurpose tray
  • 33.6Kbps super G3 modem
  • 16 one-touch dials and 300 speed dials
  • Reduction/englargement of 25 to 400 percent in one percent increments
  • First printout arrives in under 16 seconds

The second-prize HL-4040CN is a high-speed, network-ready laser printer that can also print up to 20 pages per minute in colour or in greyscale. As a single-function machine, it's a slightly more compact 41.9cm wide, 47.5cm deep and 31.7cm tall.

It has quite a few of the sterling features of its bigger stablemate: SSL-based security, PictBridge compatibility, a 250-sheet paper tray and up to 2,400x600 dpi print resolution. The £379 machine comes with a three-colour LCD display designed to make the printer status quick and easy to see at a glance.

Both printer prizes come with one year's onsite warranty. You can find more information on Brother's full range of colour multifunction and standalone printers on the company's website.

if the OLPC winds up as a vehicle to create a dependence on Windows for millions of poor people, the net effect for humanity will be negative. What makes it good is if it leads the users to freedom through free, freedom-respecting software.
